A hacker was sentenced to eight months in prison on Wednesday for a scheme that exposed intimate photos of the actor Jennifer Lawrence and other celebrities. George Garofano, 26, was accused of illegally hacking the private Apple iCloud accounts of people, including Hollywood stars as well as average internet users, allowing their nude photos and private information to be spread around the internet. He was one of four people charged in the hacking scandal , in which private photos of Lawrence, Kate Upton, Kirsten Dunst and others were published online. Lawrence said at the time the invasion was equivalent to a sex crime, and called for tougher laws. A federal judge at a US district court in Bridgeport, Connecticut, ordered Garofano to serve the prison term followed by three years of supervised release. Prosecutors argued for a sentence of 10 to 16 months in prison, in line with federal guidelines. Garofano asked for leniency, requesting no more than five months in prison and another five months of home confinement. He did not engage in this conduct on just one occasion. He engaged in this conduct times over the course of 18 months.

When I first found out it was happening, my security reached out to me. It was happening minute-to-minute — it was almost like a ransom situation where they were releasing new ones every hour or so. She had just turned 24; the breach of privacy shook her and targeted hundreds of other celebrities. So I wasn't interested in suing everybody; I was just interested in healing. Oddly, hacking has been attached to more than one pivotal moment in Lawrence's career and public discourse; after the Sony hack in , she penned an open letter about Hollywood's gender wage gap, kicking into a high gear a conversation that has not quieted down since then. She recently spoked to THR as part of a roundtable of actresses gaining early awards season buzz, and the group of women addressed Hollywood's gender inequality and recently exposed culture of endemic harassment.
